Maurice W. Downing School’s first grade students commemorated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in activities last week that reflect the late civil rights activist’s mission. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a national holiday that marks his birthday.

While learning about this great American hero, MWD students watched his “I Have a Dream” speech, read books, sang songs and crafted MLK crowns. They also discussed King’s wonderful quality traits and understood that through his example one person can change the world.

Parents were also included in the annual celebration, as each student brought home a peaceful dove symbol with an assignment. Parents were tasked to write positive quality traits their child possesses on the back of the dove symbol. These positive messages were read out loud to each student in front of the classroom. The dove symbols were then transformed into necklaces, and the students proudly wore them all day.
